This lot consists of a graphite and watercolor illustration on paper, framed under glass, done in the modern style of Auguste Rodin (French, 1840-1917). Image depicts a woman in a short leotard, suspended in a moment of fluid movement. Hand-written inscription at lower left reads, "A. Rodin". A stamp at bottom right corner reads, "M.R." -- presumably an acronym for "Musee Rodin". Overall framed dimensions approximately 15.25" x 13".

Reverse side of piece features a circular stamp which reads, "Sotheby's Auction Gallery". Below, an affixed paper label reads as follows:

"Curt Valentin Gallery. 32 East 57th Street. New York. Auguste Rodin. Watercolor. 11 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches. No. 56420."

Auguste Rodin (French, 1840-1917) was a sculptor who was generally considered the founder of modernism for his particular medium. He is perhaps most well known for sculptures such as 'The Kiss', 1882; 'The Thinker', 1880-1904; and 'The Gates of Hell', 1880-1917.
