Beatty, John Wesley (American, 1850-1924), 2 Portraits, A Scowling Man & A Man in a Tyrolean Hat, 1876, charcoal and graphite drawings on paper, 22 X 16 inches, both signed and the man with hat is dated 76, framed measuring 27 x 22.5 inches and slightly smaller, Provenance: The Estate of Charles H. Booth Jr.; John Wesley Beatty was the first director of the Department of Fine Arts at the Carnegie Institute; he organized and oversaw the development of the Carnegie International. In addition, along with George Hetzel, he opened the Pittsburgh Art School and involved himself in many other functions directly related to the promotion of artists and art in Pittsburgh and beyond. As an artist, John Beatty began as a silver engraver in Pittsburgh before going to Munich to study formally. Upon his return, his passion was painting but most of his activity was in the area of illustrating and etching.
Condition
