The collection depicts white and black male subjects ranging in age from their 20s to 50s, and whose crimes include breaking and entering, larceny, shoplifting, robbery, panhandling, counterfeiting, assault, drunk and disorderly conduct, hold-ups and stick-ups, gambling, passing bad checks, and even murder. In some cases, a subject’s past crimes, aliases, physical markers such as tattoos, or brief remarks on the crime are recorded, such as “broke window of jewelry store on Long Ave. / stole rings.”
