Pair of Scottish painted iron jardinieres, circa 1880. by Walter Macfarlane & Co., Architectural, Sanitary, and Engineering Saracen Foundry, Possilpark, Glasgow, Scotland, one of the leading most successful, and long lasting, influential iron foundries of the Victorian era. The Glasgow-based Saracen Foundry left the citizens of Britain with a legacy of grandiose decorative ironwork, which at the very least stood up to any of the firm’s 19th century rivals. Founded by Walter MacFarlane, during the 1850s, the firm’s early focus was primarily the production of large-scale public iron sanitary goods, such as latrines, basins and urinals. Recognition and success came to MacFarlane through manufacturing these mundane, yet necessary items, at a time of bursting population growth, in part a by-product of the British-led Industrial Revolution. The firm’s early success soon led to the production of standardized patterns and designs for household use, architectural adornments as well as the lavish, often fanciful or historical referenced public structures and displays for which the firm is best known.
