Description
A very intricately painted pair of Kutani Japanese bottle vases with stoppers are decorated with fun paintings of rabbits pounding rice, birds, and horses in various poses. Fabric designs fill in the areas between rondels. The line quality is very tiny and thin. Gilding has been used extensively on the body designs. Although the designs on the two vases match, the animals are in different slightly glaze colors. One vase uses white for the animals and one uses an iron red wash.
The stoppers have an orange rubber replacement probably due to the original cork having deteriorated. This must have been done many years ago because the rubber shows age too. They have three unglazed half circle feet each to elevate the bottles. The bases are glazed. There are matching hand painted Japanese characters on the bases.
MEASUREMENTS
6 ¼” (15.9 cm) tall x 2 ¾” (7.0 cm) diameter. Weighs 10.4 oz (290 g)
CONDITION
There are no breaks or chips. There is a hairline crack or concussion mark on the base of one bottle. There is moderate wear to the gilding on the mouth rims but minor gilding loss elsewhere. There is crazing to the glaze on the bases. The painting is in very good shape. The stoppers may have had the original cork replaced with rubber. Glue is visible where these were attached.
An incredibly hand painted pair of matching bottle vases to add richness to the home décor or add to a collection of Japanese porcelains.
