Description
A finely wrought Chinese metal box for storing tobacco from the 19th century. The etching is fine and highly decorative.
The heavy octagonal paktong metal box has a hinged lid. The lid is covered in etched characters surrounded by a border. The design on the base looks like an immortal with a floral border. The sides are etched with stylized bats and silk balls with lappets above and below. The narrow ends have hexagonal handles with rings through then and characters on either side. The box has a nice soft worn feel and fits easily in the hand.
MEASUREMENTS
3 3/8” (8.4 cm) long x 2” (5.1 cm) wide x 1 3/8” (3.4 cm) deep. Weighs 5.1 oz (145 g)
CONDITION
There are no breaks, cracks, or dents. There is wear from use. The design on the base is particularly worn. There is a worn raised bump on one side by a bat wing and few black spots from oxidation. The interior of the box is dark and oxidized.
A great small metal box with much history and handwork. I love the way it feels in the hand.
