***William Vaughan (1577-1641), poet and colonial pioneer. Vaughan bought a portion of the new territory of Newfoundland in 1616, and began steadily colonising it at his own expense. Vaughan visited the territory himself in 1622, but returned to England in 1625 and published The Golden Fleece a year later. He used the book, a mixture of fact, fantasy and verse, to promulgate his theories about "the Errours of Religion, the Vices and Decayes of the Kingdome, and lastly the wayes to get wealth, and to restore Trading" through the colonisation of Newfoundland..
