Description
English Engraved Glass Goblet
Early 19th century
The circular bowl engraved with a three-masted ship and inscribed, Ramillies, a circular cartouche enclosing the initials CC and a shield with agricultural implements and inscribed, Speed the Plough, on a knopped stem enclosing a 1811 Northumberland & Durham 12d token payable by John Robertson, on a circular foot. Height 8 inches; Together with a Pair of Blown Glass Candlesticks. Height 8 7/8 inches.
The ship engraved on the present goblet appears to be HMS Ramillies, which was launched in April of 1763. Ramillies was also a class of nine 74-gun third rate ships of the line, designed for the British Royal Navy by naval architect Sir Thomas Slade (1703/4-1771).
