Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 to 400 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel of a spherical form with a series of intricate, abstract faces presented in hues of burgundy, lavender, tangerine, wheat, jet black, and cream. The vessel exhibits a round but stable base, a broad body with a gently sloping shoulder, and a planar handle arching between a pair of projecting conical spouts. The highly burnished surfaces bear an image of the Anthropomorphic Mythical Being as it pins down a captive individual and extends its barb-shaped tongue towards their mouth. The Being's cape is lined on both sides with a series of trophy heads and painted faces, and his legs extend out from beneath a face-form loincloth on either side of a zigzagging trail. Size: 6.2" Diameter x 7.25" H (15.7 cm x 18.4 cm)

Display stand shown in photos is for photography purposes only.
