Item Details
Description
Sarah Garcia (Laguna/Acoma, 1928-2015), Acoma Heartline Deer Vessel, ca. 1960s. A stunning Acoma polychrome heartline deer vessel by artist Sarah Garcia. The vessel presents a white-slipped, apple-shaped body with nicely corseted shoulders and exterior walls that are decorated with three black deer standing in profile and marked with golden yellow arrows running from the mouths through the bodies, a golden orb outlined in white just before the tails, and open eyes. Below are stylized geometric Acoma motifs, and the rim is delineated with a thick black band followed by a slender, thread-like band. A beautiful vessel that combines the heartline deer motif with striking geometric designs that is also signed by the artist on the base. Size: 7.125" in diameter x 5.75" H (18.1 cm x 14.6 cm)

Although born at Laguna Pueblo to Maria Trujillo, Sarah Garcia spent her life as an adult at Acoma Pueblo. She is the daughter-in-law of Jessie Garcia who was one of the Four Matriarchs of the Acoma potter families. Along with potters Jessie Garcia, Lucy M. Lewis, and Marie Z. Chino, Sarah Garcia was pivotal in the revival of Anasazi and Tularosa motifs on contemporary Acoma pottery vessels. Garcia's daughter Goldie Hayah continues her legacy as a potter today.

Please note: Albeit larger, another Sarah Garcia polychrome heartline deer polychrome vessel is listed at the Andrea Fisher Fine Pottery gallery for $2200. In addition, see a similar heartline deer vessel by Lucy M. Lewis at the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College (accession number 2008.4.14).
