Description
Early antique Americana, Jeffersonian Era 19th Century handwritten letter, bearing the signature of Oliver Hazard Perry (1785-1819), American naval commander most noted for his heroic role in the War of 1812, earning the title "Hero of Lake Erie," and remembered for the words on his battle flag, "Don't Give Up the Ship", and for declaring, "We have met the enemy and they are ours." Includes antique engraving of Perry by James Herring. Dated 1808, with notation that it was written at the "Navy Yard, New York." Authenticated by JOSEPH RUBINFINE; includes protective matte cover folder. Previously owned by a direct descendant of the Perry family. Measures approximately 12 in x 9 in.
