Description
1740 1ed Roger North Examen Charles II Popish Plot Politics History of England
Roger North was a 17th-century English biographer who was heavily involved in the Popish Plot. Unlike his brothers Francis and Dudley, Roger remained neutral in battles between Charles II and the Catholic conspirators. While North is better known for his book ‘Lives of the Norths’, he did publish a well-known book which defended Charles II record as a good king.
‘Examen’, as the book is known, sought to prove the Catholic conspiracies were filled with lies and deceit and hoped to expose the truths of Popish Plot. It also served as rebuttal to White Kennett’s “History of England”, who spoke negatively of the king. North’s work was not published until 1740 – many years after his death and the Plot itself.
According to Lowndes,
“Like the other works of the same author, the Examen is valuable for the many original anecdotes it contains, and the view it presents of party politics.”
