Description
Measurements: 32-3/4" H x 29" W on stand

ANTIQUE, Large 17/18th C. Chinese Qing Dynasty Tibetan gilt bronze Bodhisattva Tantric Buddha figure of Mahakala Deity in manifestation Vajrapani . Appears in the form of a Raksha, with three large staring eyes, a gaping mouth with bared canine teeth and reddish-orange beard, eyebrows and hair flowing upward like flame, with the crown of five dry skulls. The body is squat, large and fleshy. Adorned with a crown of five skulls with red pendants and gold earrings, bone necklace and bracelets, anklets, and a large snake, he wears a long scarf and a lower garment of tiger skin tied with a green sash. With the left leg bent and the right extended above an oval lotus blossom pedestal. Vajrapani stands in pristine awareness. Body covered in diaphanous silk robes pleats falling from the shoulders to the lap, with flowing silk robes spilling over his legs and onto the platform. The figure is stand at Chapastana position upon a oval lotus pedestal, the left leg carrying the weight with bended knee symbolized the bow; the other leg pulled up against the body, symbolized the arrow. The right hand raised above the ear holding Crescent knife with vajra hilt, while the left arm raised to chest high, holding a bowl. The statue is masterly covered with shiny gilt jewelry over the mat cold gilt body and face. Extensive trace of gilt and red pigment on the hair. This sculpture appears to be the perfect example, by any artistic tradition, both for technical precision and exquisite form. The proportions of the body are exact and the overall presence and beauty make this sculpture a precious artistic treasure. The Buddha Deity rest upon a carved rectangular carved hardwood stand. The underside of Buddha shows an rectangular cut-out, a precisely fitting bronze comes with the sculpture.
