William Livingston (1723–1790) served as the Governor of New Jersey and was a signer of the United States Constitution. In 1772, he moved to Elizabethtown and boarded with a young Alexander Hamilton while Hamilton attended Francis Barber's grammar school. Livingston was elected Governor in 1776 and spent the majority of the time between 1776 and 1779 with his family in Parsippany for safety. During the war, there was a substantial reward for Livingston's capture, and there was one nearly successful attempt made to kidnap him in mid-June 1779. Livingston served as Governor until his death in 1790.
