Newton C. Gullett Archive of 60 Documents Re: Cattle Ranching in Texas

A collection of 60 legal documents relating to the sale and trade of cattle in Texas, dated 1873 to 1884. The majority record sales and purchases made by Newton C. Gullett in Navarro, Refugio, Hynes Bay, Victoria, and other Texas cities. The collection provides a unique look at the cattle trade and the variety of different marks and brands used by ranchers. Examples of sales and purchases can be found below:

Navarro, dated May 3, 1873: "…the undersigned authority personally appeared, P.T. Tullos and being by me duly sworn, sayes that the animal, which he presents to be Estrayed was taken up, on his plantation, that the marks & brands thereof have not been erased or defaced. Since the same was taken up and that notice has been given as the law directs and no owner has been found…"

Refugio, dated January 29, 1878: "…Samuel E. Townsend for an in consideration of the sum of one hundred and forty dollars to be cash in hand payed the receipt…do Bargain, sell and deliver unto N.C. Gullett my whole half interest in the stock of cattle branded thus T*G…"

Hynes Bay, dated May 9, 1879: "Received of N.C. Gullett the sum of Twenty Dollars ($20.00) for 2 Work Oxen branded thus…" from Russell Davis.

Hynes Bay, dated December 8, 1879: "Received of N.C. Gullet Seven Hundred and forty seven 50/100 Dollars (747 50/100) for 115 hd cattle at 6.50 per head. The above amount in pull payment for the cattle. Branded…"

Refugio, dated September 18, 1880: "…in consideration of Sixty Dollars to me paid by N.C. Gullett, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, I, W.A. Bickford…do bargain, sell, and convey to the said N.C. Gullett two Bulls, one about three years old, branded SG. The other about five years old, branded KH Ear marked…"

Most of the documents have flattened folds, with varying degrees of toning throughout. The group has varying amounts of soiling and ink smudging as well. Overall very good.

Newton Cannon Gullett (1822-1900) was a rancher and merchant from Tennessee. He lived in Mississippi and Louisiana before eventually settling in Texas, where he acquired a large plot of land through land speculation. He fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War and returned to Texas following the war. Upon his marriage to Charlotte Osborn Bernard in 1872, Gullett acquired a large undeveloped plot of land which he and his wife turned into a ranch. The 25,000 acres ran through the San Antonio and Guadalupe Rivers, Hynes and San Antonio Bayes, and Guadalupe, and was named Tivoli Ranch. The ranch became a pioneer in the cattle business and specialized in Scotch Polled Angus (a very adaptable breed of cattle). Gullett ended up losing his life during the 1900 Galveston Hurricane.
