Description
A manuscript document in Russian signed by Czar Paul I (1754-1801) at upper right. Dated 1800. The document is not transcribed or translated, but it consists of an "ukaz," or official royal pronouncement, recognizing a Russian prince whose name can be found in the second line of text. The watermarked leaf of laid paper inscribed in secretarial script shows overall light toning. Minor edge darkening and a few tiny chips, else near fine. 7.75" x 13."
Czar Paul I was officially the only son of Czar Peter III and Czarina Catherine II, though the Empress was notorious for her infidelity and he could have been the son of her lover Sergei Saltykov. Paul was assassinated less than two years after writing this document, in late March 1801, when a small group of conspirators supported by his eldest son, the future Czar Alexander I, killed him in St. Michael's Castle in St. Petersburg.
