John F. Kennedy TLS with Related Letters Re: A Disabled Veteran
A John F. Kennedy typed letter signed, 1p, measuring 8" x 10.5", Washington, D.C., dated March 17, 1953. Signed "John" and addressed to Richard S. Kelley on U.S. Senate letterhead. The letter responds to Kelly's request on behalf of a disabled veteran, Thomas Lally. Kennedy writes that he has contacted Colonel Mesick on Lally's behalf and will get in touch once a reply is received.
The letter is accompanied by Kelley's letter, dated February 13, 1953, in which he highlights Lally's personal qualities and recent employment troubles. Reading in part: "Thomas Lally one of the most active members of the Somerville Committee which worked in your behalf in the recent campaign, is now and has been since April 22, 1952, employment as a Clerk at the Watertown Arsenal…He has tried with no success to be put on permanent duty in the Civil Service I believe the classification is 'Indefinite basis', but has made no progress…" Along with both a handwritten and typed copy of Lally's record, as well as Lally's January 22, 1953, letter addressed to Kelley. All of the letters have flattened mail folds. The Kennedy signed letter has some small holes from a removed staple and is boldly signed. The others have varying degrees of toning, along with some minor soiling and a small area of chipping.
