Attributed George Chinnery Drawing Chinese Figures Fishermen Macau
Artist: Attributed to George Chinnery (1774-1852)
Title: Fishermen off the Macao Coast
Medium: Pencil and Ink on Paper
Dimensions: 31 x 17cm
This unusual pencil and ink drawing depicts the Tanka people, a seafaring group that inhabited the coastal regions of the South China Sea.
George Chinnery (1774-1852) was an English painter who spent much of his life in India and Southern China. From around 1825 until his death in 1852 he lived in Macau, producing numerous drawings of the locals. He would frequently spend time in Canton Province, where he found patronage in the local merchants and visiting captains that periodically docked there. In 1846 he spent six months in Hong Kong and his detailed studies give us a valuable picture of this newly formed colony.
