Ariel Sharon Signed 2003 Israeli Campaign Poster; He Would Handily Win Re-election as Prime Minister

A campaign poster signed “A. Sharon” in Hebrew, 27.5” x 20”. Cardboard poster in Hebrew, in navy, blue, and white, with the first word underlined in red: “Only Sharon / Will Bring Peace.” Signed in the wide lower white margin. Fine condition.

On February 6, 2001, Israel elected 72-year-old Ariel Sharon as Prime Minister. In a landslide victory, the Likud party leader received 62.5 percent of the vote, forcing Prime Minister Ehud Barak to resign from Labor's leadership. The campaign was held during a period of the worst Israeli-Palestinian violence in years. Barak had been elected Prime Minister just 21 months earlier promising to accelerate peace negotiations with the Palestinians and Syria. His proposals were then rejected by Palestinian leader Yassir Arafat who urged a Palestinian uprising against Israel. During the campaign, Sharon suggested that he would break off further negotiations with the Palestinians until the violence ended. He then proposed a settlement offering them about 42% of the West Bank and almost 90% of the Gaza Strip, roughly the territory they already controlled. Politically popular with the Israeli people, Sharon swept to victory; the margin was unprecedented in Israeli history. Two years later, in 2003, Sharon led his Likud Party to another resounding victory. Sharon was the first incumbent Israeli Prime Minister to win re-election since the 1980's. The poster is accompanied by a letter from an Israeli book dealer who purchased the poster from an individual associated with the 2003 election campaign.
