Description
Circa 14th century AD A cast bronze bifacial enamelled banneret, rectangular with sturdy loop above; the arms to each face a chevron on a red field between pine cones. Bronze, 13 grams, 22 mm (1") Property of an Essex Gentleman. The arms are blazoned 'gules, a chevron ermine between three pinecones or' a variant of the Pine family arms 'gules a chevron argent between three pine cones or'. A knight named Thomas de Pin appears in St George's Roll of Arms. The Pyne or Pine family is recorded at East Downe, Devonshire: Oliver Pyne, of Ham, Cornwall, married the heiress of Downe, of East Downe, in the reign of Edward III.
