Description
American Revolution
Naval "Anchor" Punchmarked Midshipman's Pressgang Tool
c. 1770 Revolutionary War Era, Naval Midshipman's Wooden Pressgang "recruitment" Tool with a Naval "Anchor" Punch-marked Head, Choice Very Fine.
This large Wooden Naval Midshipman's Pressgang tool is definitely used. It remains in choice original condition, measuring 13" long and its thick solid head measuring 2.5" in diameter. The solid wood surfaces have a nice natural patina acquired from age as shown in our photos. The end of the head has a clear Punchmark stamped with a Naval "Anchor" design. Pressgang tools were used for keeping Sailors in line, and for Pressgang "recruitment" known to be used to abduct likely sailors to serve on British Warships, as well as sometimes being useful during a Naval boarding attack, or in one's self defense on pay day at the docks.
