The book Mesilat Yesharim authored by the Ramchal, is a fundamental book on ethics that earned great respect from Torah sages throughout the generations. The Maggid of Kozhnitz declared that he reached his level of greatness only due to his study of Mesilat Yesharim.
The righteous Rabbi Yosef Zundel of Salant related to his disciple, Rabbi Yisrael of Salant, that when he left the town of Volozhin he sought the counsel of Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin as to which book of ethics he should study.
