Emil Volkers was a famous 19th century German portraitist. His paintings were highly appreciated among European rulers. His specialty was the equestrian portraits that he managed to achieve with great skill as he knew perfectly the anatomy and characteristics of the animal. The Battle of Sedan, which took place between August 31st and September 2nd 1870, and which ended the first phase of the Franco-Prussian war, brought about the fall of the second French Empire. The artist's attention is always focused on horses that move within the landscape with power and vigor.
