Description
DESCRIPTION: An antique Jennens & Bettridge Papier Mache single inkwell desk stand. This is a large single inkwell made on papier mache and designed with an organic triangular oval form. The tray has been painted with a black lacquered finish and is further decorated with mother of pearl inlaid edge motif and floral gilt hand painted motif decorations. It is signed by top English maker, Jennens & Bettridge, visible on the underside. It includes a large glass lidded inkwell glass bottle with floral form. (Ref V5).
Jennens and Bettridge were highly regarded for producing quality papier-mache wares. They acquired the workshops of Henry Clay, Japanner to George III and the Prince of Wales, in 1816. Their original premises were in Birmingham and they started a London branch at 3 West Halkin Street, Belgravia in 1837.
CIRCA: Late 19th Century.
ORIGIN: England.
