[TEMPERANCE]. A New Society Called the Self-Examining Society. N.p.: N.p.,   [ca 1830s-1840s].8 1/4 x 11 1/2 in. letterpress broadside (heavily toned above top fold line, scattered spotting, small tear along top center fold).A humorous and satirical reflection on the large number of reform societies of the period, this broadside calls on men and women to examine themselves prior to urging the improvement of others: "And were a society for self-examination once initiated in this or any other place, and made as popular as our temperance societies and many others now are, how much less running to and fro, or of numbers standing in the streets, thanking God that they are not like other men, should we then behold!" [With:] LYMAN, Joseph (1749-11828). A Sermon, Preached at Hatfield, October, 20, 1807. At the Opening of Hatfield Bridge. Northampton: William Butler, 1807. (Disbound, scattered spotting, red ink blotches on several pages).  Lyman was a minister at the First Congregational Church in Hatfield, Massachusetts, for more than 50 years, as well as a founder of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions.
