Charles Sprague Pearce. A painter of bucolic landscapes, Herman Hartwich was born in New York City, studied in Munich, Germany from 1881 to 1885, and was also in Paris, where he exhibited at the Paris Salon six times, winning a prize in 1892. He returned to New York in 1894. Exhibition venues included the National Academy of Design and the St. Louis Exposition of 1904. He embarked upon a career as a painter and in 1873," with the advice of William Morris Hunt, an early American impressionist, moved to Paris to study at the Leon Bonnat School. At the Leon Bonnat School, he studied with fellow student, John Singer Sargent, and soon became a member of an artist's circle consisting of other expatriates including Chester Loomis, Edwin Blashfield, and Milne Ramsey..
