probably late 4th or early 3rd century B.C., head of a male wearing princely fillet, probably depicting Hephaestion, 7-1/2 x 5-1/2 x 6-1/2 in., modern base, losses, abrasions and surface dirt as found, neck drilled for mounting rod Provenance: Royal-Athena Galleries, New York, 1999; Collection of the late Reynolds Price Reserve: $36,000 Royal-Athena Galleries catalogue, [Art of the Ancient World,] Volume XI, Millennium Edition, January 2000, illustrates and describes this head: "This nearly life-size bluish marble head of a youthful prince is believed to depict Hephaestion, Alexander the Great's friend and second-in-command. This sculptural type is known from three other very similar marble heads including one in the J. Paul Getty Museum. Our head, the fourth known example, is apparently the finest preserved" (catalogue accompanies lot).
