Description
DESCRIPTION: Manifesto and Proclamation - Britain's Last Attempt at Reconciliation. Presented by the Earl of Carlisle, Sir Henry Clinton, and William Eden this proclamation was issued in October 1778 after France entered the American Revolution. It offered general amnesty and pardon with internal self-government and the repeal of Parliamentary taxation, everything the colonies had originally asked for. However, due to the assistance of the French, independence was now achievable and the Continental Congress rejected their plea. Using a Tory printer (and reputed Colonial spy), James Rivington, the Peace Commission appealed to the states, who in turn rejected the plea by burning down Rivington's New York shop. This manifesto and proclamation still has the original wood cut of the Royal Arms at the top and the names of the Peace Commissioners at the bottom. Found in Victorian frame; lined with newspaper dated 1904. PROVENANCE: From a Philadelphia family. The consignor is a direct descendant of Mary Rittenhouse (1795-1873). MEASUREMENTS: 23-1/4" high x 18-1/4" wide. Overall 30-3/4" high x 25" wide. CONDITION: Very good overall condition. Laid down to board. Minor discoloration due to age and framing. Chipping to sides; horizontal tears originating from margins, perhaps from being rolled in the past. Two 1 inch areas of minimal loss to center crease. One inch wide loss to top of document near crest, does not impact crest. NOTE: Please contact auction company at info@cordierauction.com to request additional high resolution images.
