Item Details
Description
Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A dazzling jar, mold-blown from brilliant yellow glass with a spherical body, rounded shoulders, a corseted neck, and a wide flared rim, all sitting upon a slightly concave base. The body is vertically lined with integral, chocolate-brown ribs as rigaree of the same color zigzags between the rim and shoulder. Across most of the surface is a layer of lustrous rainbow as well as silvery iridescence that formed as the glass aged and accentuates its beautiful form. Size: 4.5" in diameter x 4.875" H (11.4 cm x 12.4 cm)

Collection labels on base. Small area of loss to trailing. Rough pontil scar on base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Silver and rainbow iridescence throughout.
