Description
A fine example of a New England Glass cast fixed globe lantern. It has "A & StL over RR" cast in a square panel. It is very heavy. Probably the heaviest A&StL I have ever seen. It's a very early model where the bail goes "thru" the top, not under in on the vent tube. The frame is fine. I've never seen applied pin catches (leaf springs) that hold the top to the base before. This must have been a shop or employee "improvement". It is New England Glass Company all the way: (1) dagger style vents (2) 5 point rounded star intake holes (3) recessed glass fount is holding - many pop off the base because of a weak design (4) square panel for cast globe (5) globe has extended top and bottom - for a better plaster hold. A very nice lantern with no problems, sure a couple of very minor scratches in the glass and frame but no abuse.
The Atlantic & Saint Lawrence was an 1854 venture building a line from the St Lawrence River in Canada to Portland, Maine. This gave Canada access to a Winter port all 12 months a year. The name changed to the Grand Trunk Railway in abut 1855, so this name was very short lived.
