Native American, Southwestern United States, Zuni, ca. 20th to 21st century CE. A charming hand-carved alabaster stone fetish depicting an adorable pair of bears carved by Zuni artist Brandon Philips. Their backs are finely incised with triangular patterning, and they lean against each other and stare forward with perked ears and short snouts; the eyes are formed from inlaid turquoise chips. The bottom of the foot is signed with the artist's name and tribe "B. PHILIPS / ZUNI NM." Fetish carvings are used as amulets for protection and to ensure plentiful hunting, often in the form of animals. Zuni believe that predatory animals possess a spiritual influence over their prey, which can ensure a successful hunt. Size: 2.25" L x 2.5" W x 2.5" H (5.7 cm x 6.4 cm x 6.4 cm)
