Description
Abstract work inscribed by Roberto, 1960
Measurements:The frame is 1/2 inch, if you want to subtract from 18 inches by 14 inches(yes it included the frame). The work seems to be paper, painted and then glued down on more paper, then painted.Measurements: 18 inches by 14 inches(including the 1/2 inch frame).

An interesting work which is layered then painted collage. The inscription ending in the name Roberto, might very well refer to Roberto Crippa, who often has two 'eyes' in the middle of his paintings and other works of art. Crippa did work similar to this in the 1960s and might very likely have known and/or been friends with Roger Prigent.

Provenance: Estate of Roger Prigent.

Roger Prigent
NYTimes Obit: Roger Prigent, who gave up a promising career in fashion photography when his eyesight began to fail three decades ago and who became a prominent Manhattan antiques dealer, leading a popular new wave in French Empire furnishings, died on Saturday in Manhattan. He was 89.

Mr. Prigent, a colleague of Richard Avedon, whom he idolized, photographed the great modeling swans of Diane von Furstenberg and other postwar designers for the covers of and glossy spreads in Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, McCalls and The Ladies Home Journal for nearly 30 years, from the early 1950s to the late 1970s.Editors said his imaginative camera, moving from studios to the sidewalks of New York, Paris, Rome and other capitals of fashion, elongated the giraffe neck of Suzy Parker and with a simple wisp of veil lent mystery to the elegant eyes of Dovima, even as the models swimsuits, sheaths, wraps, furs, bags, shoes and hats crept subconsciously into the mind. Mr. Prigents subjects for the covers of TV Guide were mainstays of entertainment: Sonny and Cher, Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett, Leslie Uggams and his photographs lighted the covers of record albums by Barbra Streisand, Alice Cooper and others.

Roberto Crippa
(Source: mchampetier.com) The painter-sculptor Roberto Crippa was born in Milan in 1921. He studied at the Brera Art Academy in Milan where he was the fellow student of Aldo Carpi, dAchille Funi and Carlo Carra. At the beginning of his career, like many young painters of his generation, Roberto Crippa was influenced by neo-cubism and was thus generalized. His first solo exhibition was at the Bergamini Gallery in Milan in 1947.

The artist was one of the first in Italy to practice gestural painting, which he produced between 1948-1952 his sharply-colored spiral webs. In 1948, Crippa becomes one of the founding members of the Spacialist group, a group founded around Lucio Fontana, whose objective was to search for a new spatial representation, by technical means that was resolutely modern. From 1948 he participated regularly in group exhibitions and notably the Biennale of Venice.

Later, he devoted himself to what he called Collages-- cut out forms that animate static surfaces. Roberto Crippa plays with the effects of matter on rough thick, surfaces, like wood or bark; the effects of plant elements or smooth or shiny metal, or transparent elements. His research naturally leads him towards sculpture and from 1956 he constructs numerous cut-out, welded metal works, of insects and monsters that are in line with the work of Chadwick. The artist is interested in movement in space; is he not he experienced airplane pilot who will represent Italy in the world aeronautic championship in 1971.

Paralleling his painting and sculpture, Roberto Crippa also experimented with graphic work (engravings, lithographs, illustrated books). In the middle of the 60s, he moves towards monochrome reliefs, most often painted in tones of gray. The artist died in a plan crash in 1972 in Bresso. He was 50 years old.
