Description
Albrecht Durer (German, 1471-1528). Drypoint on laid paper trimmed inside the plate mark, titled "Saint Jerome by the Pollard Willow." Signed in plate along the left side of the print, c. 1558-1571. Crest of Schrobenhauser watermark (M.195) with collector's stamp of Kipferstichkabinett, Cabinet des Estampes, Dresden along the upper left. With Certificate of Authenticity from Park West Gallery.
A Meder IID impression with the date, monogram, and cross still visible and the fine "scratches, almost like rain, toward the cross" but before the retouching of the plate in the third state.
Literature: Bartsch 59, Meder 58.
Saint Jerome, who renounced his study of ancient Greek and Latin in favor of the Christian Bible, spent much of his life translating the Old and New Testaments into Latin. The sleeping lion at his feet derives from a story that says the animal became a lifelong companion after Saint Jerome pulled a thorn from its paw. Durer shows Jerome in a moment of devout religious intensity as he clasps his hands in reverence towards the crucifix on his desk.
Sight; height: 8 in x width: 7 in. Framed; height: 26 1/2 in x width: 27 3/4 in.
