William Evan Charles Morgan was born in London on 19 October 1903 and studied at Camberwell School of Art (1920-22), and at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London (1922-24). In 1924, he was awarded the Prix de Rome Scholarship, enabling him to continue his studies in Italy. He subsequently worked primarily as an etcher and engraver. About the horse: Bred on the Rutland farm of Owen Hugh Smith, Vivandiere was Champion Mare at Royal Agricultural Society Show, Manchester in 1930. She is a thoroughbred chestnut Suffolk Punch, an English breed of heavy draft horse prized for its power, stamina, longevity and docility. Shorter and more sturdily built than the feather-hoofed Shire horse, the Suffolk Punch was originally bred to plough the clay soils of East Anglia. Subsequently, they were used to pull brewersÕ drays, omnibuses and, in wartime, for pulling heavy artillery. The Suffolk Punch was still popular in the 1930s, but post-war mechanization resulted in a sharp decline of its numbers. A ÔvivandiereÕ is woman who accompanies troops to sell them food, supplies and alcohol.
