André Hambourg (French, 1909-1999), à la carrière en novembre
oil on canvas, signed at lower left, presented in a very fine period carved gilt frame with wide linen liner and gallery plaque, with artist's initials and titled to verso of canvas, retains gallery label to the verso.
Stretcher size 9 1/4 x 21 in.; Frame dimensions 17 1/4 x 29 in.
André Hambourg studied at the École nationale supérieure de Arts Décoratifs and the École des Beaux-Arts under the tutelage of Lucien Simon. During the 1930s, Hambourg received much praise for his paintings. He traveled throughout Morocco and Algiers, which provided much inspiration for his early work. In 1939, he was honored with a solo exhibition of his paintings at the Musée d'Outre-Mer in Paris.
During WWII, Hambourg served as a journalist and draughtsman for the French army. He was awarded several medals for his service during this time, including the Croix de Guerre. From the 1950s until his death in 1999, André Hambourg was celebrated world wide for his lively and bright landscapes, seascapes and equestrian paintings. His paintings are in numerous public and private collections including the André Hambourg Museum in Deauville, France and the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris.
