The shape is that of a stylized sitting frog - a creature greatly revered for its resiliency and association with water in this semi-dessert region. Frog motifs are found in various forms of artwork throughout Central Asia, including on carpets, embroideries, pottery, and jewelry. According to the Sanat Art Journal, Frog representations in jewelry were believed to provide the wearer with protection against hardship and renewed vigor.
