Item Details
Description
Original page from the Washington DC National Intelligencer for June 8, 1826, with an announcement by James Monroe in the first column: "For Sale, The residue of my Mountain tract of Land in Albemarle County, near Charlottesville, which residue consists of about 2800 acres of which about 940 are of the best mountain quality, and the remaining part of good quality. The whole tract is remarkably well timbered, and watered, and advantageously situated. On the montain part there is a commodious Dwelling House with a Grist and Saw Mill and there are other improvements on other parts of the tract. This tract will be divided into small parts to suit the convenience of purchasers. For Sale, also, the tract below Milton, containing 700 acres, on which there are two commodious Dwelling Houses, with other necessary buildings for each, and at a suitable distance to admit a division of the tract into two parts. The payment of the purchase money will be admitted by installments and very liberal credit will be given on the payment of interest. The mountain tract will be offered for sale on the second monday of June next, and the tract below Milton on the Wednesday ensuing. I shall attend on the premises to treat with those who may be disposed to purchase. -James Monroe." Other interesting items on the page include a notice with a plea from William Pelham on behalf of the Owenist Utopian community founded in New Harmony Indiana in 1825. He says so many people are trying to emigrate to New Harmony that there is not accommodation for them all, and begs them to please wait to see if they have been assured of a place before coming, lest they travel far only to be rejected. Page is shrink wrapped to supporting foam core. Sheet, approx. 20 1/2" x 17 1/2".
