Description
Paul Calle (1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (B. 1961) "World Demands Justice from War Criminals" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board.

Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.

This painting is the original which appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands The 20th Century series 60c World Demands Justice from War Criminals stamp issued November 16, 1998.

"This trial . . . is of supreme importance to millions of people allover the globe," announced the presiding judge of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, Germany, on November 20, 1945. Over a period of 10 months, 21 defendants -- Nazi Party, German government, German military and naval leaders -- were charged with crimes against peace, war crimes, crimes against humanity and conspiracy. Ten were sentenced to hang. Fittingly, their bodies were disposed of in the same concentration camp ovens used for so many thousands of their victims. In May 1946, 28 more defendants were brought to trial in Japan for war crimes. On December 23, 1948, seven were executed for their terrible deeds. The establishment of these International Tribunals established the principle that war criminals would be held accountable for their actions.
