MASTODON IVORY CRIBBAGE BOARD & TIME CAPSULE
Artist: Jon Rush
This remarkable artifact was beautifully scrimshawed and mounted by Jon Rush in 1982, an achievement all the more remarkable in that Mr Rush is registered as legally blind. The standard arrangement of the cribbage board is interspersed with a text concerning the Native Americans’ relationship with the land, and seven finely stippled portraits of luminaries from Chief Joseph of the Nez Percé, to Sitting Bull. The ends are capped in silver with entwined rope motifs, mounted with nickels showing a buffalo, and a Native American profile. The side is scrimshawed with an explanatory scroll and the underside inset with a dark ivory plaque detailing this as Time Capsule No.1 (of ten) not to be opened by the owner until 2982. Supported on four turned walrus-ivory legs, it measures 16 1/2 inches around the curve.
