John Geoffrey Caruthers Little (AKA: John Little) is perhaps Canada's premier living painter of urban life. He was born in and lives in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

His mediums are oil on canvas, oil on canvas board and oil on Masonite*. Works in other mediums like watercolor, ink, pencil and mixed mediums are rare as few have come up for auction, and there appear to be none in museum collections. His subjects are primarily urban street scenes and genre*. The locations are mostly in Montreal; however, there are also some set in other cities notably London, New York and Quebec City.

His style is Fauvism*. AskART Image Examples have some excellent illustrations of the range and nature of his work.

His formal art education includes classes at the Art Association of Montreal (1) (1945 - 1947) under Arthur Lismer (2) and Goodridge Roberts; and, at the Art Students' League* of New York (c.1948 - 1949) under Will Barnet and Frank Joseph Reilly. While in New York he also worked briefly on the Bruce Gentry comic strip (c.1948 - 1949) under Ray Bailey (3). When he returned to Montreal he worked as a draughtsman at his father's architectural firm, Luke & Little (1949 - 1953). In 1953 he began painting full time.

In 1961 he was elected an associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts* (4) and exhibited with them in 1952 and 1966. He also exhibited at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from 1946 to 1954.

Some of the most prestigious private galleries in Canada have exhibited his paintings including Watson Galleries, Continental Galleries and, currently, Galerie Walter Klinkhoff, all of Montreal.

His works are very avidly collected. They are also in some important Canadian public collections including the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery (Concordia University, Montreal), the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, the University of Montreal and the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa)(5).
