Description
1805 RARE MAPS Jedidiah Morse American Geography US Constitution Indians Europe
Jedidiah Morse was an important and prominent geographer known for his American textbooks, books that earned him the name ‘father of American geography.’ His most famous book was ‘American Universal Geography,’ which outlined and detailed all of the known countries and parts of the world. An abridged edition was also printed for use in schools which was given the title ‘Geography Made Easy’ – a work which Howes refers to as “the first American school geography and first American book describing the western country.”
In addition to notes on geography and topography, this work describes America during the Revolutionary War along with an early printing of the US Constitution and Amendments. Other topics include discovery of the new world and early European settlements in the Americas.
It should be noted that the title page of this fifth edition calls for a ‘General Atlas of the World containing Sixty-Three Maps by Arrowsmith and Lewis’. However, according to Sabin, no such atlas exists.
