This is a portable altimeter manufactured for the War Department in 1943-44, for field topographical use, manufactured for the Corp of Engineers by Wallace & Tiernan Products, Inc., Belleville, New Jersey. The instrument is ruggedly housed in a solid wood box ( 6½" x 6½" x 4" tall), reinforced with metal strips. Corners of the box are protected with metal trim. The lid is hinged with a metal closure. Attached is a canvas hand carrying handle. On the bottom of the box is a slide-out metal plate with a hole for mounting the device on a wall and the initials "U. S." stamped on the back. Inside the lid is a nomograph. The face of the altimeter is enclosed in thick, clear plastic. Untested but looks to be in working condition.
