The "first comprehensive history of the infancy of this industry," as noted by Howes, notable as well for the woodburytype illustrations, including the frontispiece of The Phillips and Woodford Wells, Tarr Farm; the others are portraits of notables in the development of the oil industry. Condition
Flaking and loss to spine labels, slight lean to spine; facsimile title page chipped along edges, scattered foxing and soiling, text generally clean throughout, two inch gouge along fore edge resulting in minor chipping to margins; very good.
