Description
This lot consists of a framed oil painting on canvas, done in the impressionist style of Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917). "Degas" is hand written at bottom right. A testament to the poignant sensibility so often associated with Degas. This piece would be a highlight to any collector's gallery. Overall framed dimensions approximately 11" x 18.25".
Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917) was famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. Though he is regarded as one of the founding members of Impressionism, Degas rejected the term, preferring instead to be called a Realist. He was a superb draftsman, and particularly masterful at depicting movement, as can be seen in his rendition of dancers, racecourse subjects, and the female anatomy. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and for their uncanny portrayal of human isolation.
