This lot consists of an unframed gouache illustration on paper, rendered in the modern style of Fauvist painter Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954). "Henri Matisse" is inscribed in graphite at lower right. A striking piece executed in the modernist style for which Matisse was so well known. Overall unframed dimensions measure approximately 11.75" x 8.25".

Henri Matisse (French, 1869 - 1954) was an artist known for both his fluid use of colour and his original draughtsmanship. He was an illustrator, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentieth century.
