Description
This lot consists of an unframed ink and watercolor illustration on paper, done in the academic surrealist style of Paul Delvaux (Belgian, 1897-1994). Image depicts a woman's face juxtaposed with a waterfall of leaves that seem to tumble from her hair. A handwritten inscription at lower left corner reads, "P. Delvaux". Unframed dimensions approximately 6.5" x 4.5".
Paul Delvaux (Belgian, 1897-1994) was best known for his dream-like depictions of classical architecture, female figures, and bizarre juxtapositions that created a decidedly surrealist effect. Delvaux was a deliberate and meticulous draftsman. Throughout his career, he dealt with intense perfectionism that infused his work with extreme, even hallucinatory, detail.
