Four (4) Surveyor's Equipment items. 1st item: Thomas Whitney, Philadelphia Vernier Compass, No. 448, comprised of brass with a glass face, the steel eight-point dial with black lines and lettering for each cardinal direction, a fleur de lis representing North, a black steel directional needle on central brass post, with a vernier scale to outer circumference. Maker's marks to dial. Includes one intact leveling vial, bottom of face. Museum accession number to bottom sight vane. 9" H x 15" W. 2nd item: Gunter's chain, comprised of cast iron links with tags and one handle at each end. One stage with museum accesion number. Approximately 33 ft. 3rd item: Station staff, comprised of a wooden octagonal shaft with a cast iron tip. Museum accession numbers to base. 56 1/4" L. 4th item: Hand-carved wooden frame with handles to each side, intended for a surveyor's compass. Inscribed "JCP" to underside. Museum accession numbers to one side. 1 1/4" H x 10 3/4" W. All items 19th century. Provenance: The collection of a Tennessee institution.
