An extremely rare China Trade porcelain cane. The cylindrical porcelain handle is 3 1/2" high and 3/4" in diameter. It has a blue rosette painted on top with gold 1/4" rounded overlay at its center. The sides are decorated with rings of blue scrolls and flowers that frame a painted central scene of flowers and bamboo done in umber, in the Chinese manner. There is a 1/4" ringed gold collar on a chestnut wood shaft that ends with a 7/8" horn ferrule. The overall length is 36" and the condition is very good, with a small dent in the overlay on the top, and some loss of finish on the shaft. Found in France, it was probably made there with an imported handle, ca 1885. China Trade porcelain handles are extremely scarce. This is the first we have had to offer in 20 years of doing all-cane auctions. Estimate: $3000-$4000.
