"Epée d’apparat, Kuba, République Démocratique du Congo.

Nommée ilwoon et réservée aux notables Kuba, cette épée se distingue par la très belle qualité du décor ornant la lame et la poignée. Les deux faces du pommeau sont gravées du motif rayonnant classique, nommé itaang. L’extrémité de la poignée, où se loge la lame, est renforcée par un anneau métallique, l’intérieur empli d’une pâte résineuse dans laquelle sont incrustés des coquillages. Très belle patine d’usage, brun nuancé, sur la poignée."

Zeremonialwaffen zeichnen sich durch sorgfältige Herstellung und dekorative Gestaltung, z.B. der Verzierung mit wertvollen Materialien wie Kupfer, Bronze, Elfenbein oder Fell, aus.

Die ursprünglich Funktion ist damit eingeschränkt, so dass eine Verwendung als Kampfwaffe nicht mehr im Vordergrund steht. Vielmehr signalisieren sie den sozialen Status und die Macht des Trägers und sind damit eher Kult-, Prunk-, Würde- und Statuswaffen die auch im Tauschhandel Verwendung fanden.
