Artist: LEONETTO CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) Size: 6 3/8 x 8 1/8 in./16.4 x 22.5 cm While one would be hard pressed to find this exact bull in any of Cappiello’s great output, it is remarkably similar in palette to his design for Bouillon Kub in 1931 (see Cappiello/Rennert, 490). Both present a fiercely black bull against a saturated marigold background, a splash of red popping off the page to either advertise the product or, in this case, give us a toreador’s cape. On the verso, a note from the Devambez archives says that the design was unpublished; however, it is quite possible that this was one of many potential posters Cappiello created for Kub at the time.
